Born This Way Impact to Remain for Years
Description
Lauren Appelbaum looks at the legacy and history of Born This Way, a docuseries that followed seven people with Down Syndrome. These women and men have shown abled people that disabled people can live full and happy lives. The show also had a racially diverse cast, including far more than just the white representation that dominates on screens. Appelbaum notes how important the show is for demonstrating that disabled people can work, a prevelant myth that severely limits the ability of disabled people to find jobs. By busting myths and humanizing stereotypes, their representation, and others like it, have helped change the way disabled people are seen by society.
